Day 1: Arrive in San Jose
Arrive in San Jose where you will be met by a driver who will transfer you to your designated hotel.
Day 2: San Jose - Tortuguero
Depart San Jose early in the morning, heading through the beautiful Braulio Carrillo National Park and on for a pit stop to enjoy some breakfast at the Rio Danta private restaurant. Continue onwards through banana plantations to the pier, where you will take a boat ride through the canals to Mawamba Lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon you will depart by boat to a trail leading to the nearby National Park where you can embark on a guided walk through the tropical rainforest. Before heading back to the lodge, you can pay a visit to the town of Tortuguero for an added round of sightseeing, after which you can relax back at the lodge before enjoying the dinner which will be served at 7:30pm. From July to September you can embark on an optional night tour to observe turtle nesting (at own expense).
Make an early start to the day by heading on through the visually stunning Braulio Carillo National Park via bus, making a pit stop en route for breakfast. As you travel along the road you will see plenty of local produce being grown, including pineapples and bananas. On arrival at the pier you will embark on a boat ride which navigates the fantastic Tortuguero canals. Once you arrive at your lodgings you will receive a refreshing cocktail and lunch before exploring the town, the beach and the green turtle information centre. Return back to your lodgings afterwards where dinner is served at 7pm.
Day 3: Tortuguero
Spend the morning enjoying breakfast before setting out to explore Mawamba Park. Your guided visit includes such highlights as visiting the butterfly farm, the frog farm, the iguana farm and the biodigestor along with a pleasant walk along the lodge’s private trails followed by lunch at the pool restaurant. During the afternoon you’re treated to a boat ride across the Tortuguero canals, a network of both natural and man-made lakes, rivers and canals that serve as a great place to catch glimpses of local wildlife including caimans, sloths, monkeys and crocodiles. The remainder of the day is spent at your leisure before dinner is served.
Enjoy a morning breakfast before embarking on a guided walk through the trails. Spend some free time before lunch, and in the afternoon you have the chance to pay a visit to Tortuguero National Park and navigate its many canals made up of man-made and natural lakes rivers and canals that serve as a great place to catch glimpses of local wildlife including caimans, sloths, monkeys and crocodiles. The remainder of the day is spent at your leisure before dinner is served.
Day 4: Tortuguero - Arenal
Ride aboard a shared boat transfer after breakfast, heading back to the pier where you will continue on by bus to head towards the next destination. Enjoy lunch en route and continue by ground in a private transfer with an English speaking driver to reach Arenal, a true Costa Rican highlight. Home of the Arenal Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in all of Central America, this hotspot is a vibrant attraction for people the world over to see, and during peak season is by no means a peaceful area. Since 2010, Arenal Volcano has ceased erupting but is still a popular place to visit.
Day 5: Arenal
Spend the entire day at your leisure, discovering the town of Arenal as you wish or embark on one of the many optional activities in the area, from hiking to the volcano, mountain biking, canopy tours, hot spring visits and horse riding adventures.
Day 6: Arenal – Monteverde
Travel today across Lake Arenal to Rio Chiquito where you will embark on a jeep or minibus to your hotel in the wonderful town of Monteverde. Set in a humid temperature amongst a forest filled with clouds, the scenic town includes a protected Biological Reserve that is home to many animals, including the endangered golden toad and vibrant Quetzal bird along with a huge variety of butterflies.
Day 7: Monteverde
The day is spent at your own leisure to uncover the wonders of Monteverde alone or on one of the many optional excursions that are made available to you. Pay a visit to the hummingbird, orchid or butterfly gardens, explore the cloud forest reserves, marvel at the forest canopy from high up on the bridges of the Sky Walk or take a thrilling zip line ride through the treetops.
Day 8: Monteverde – San Jose
Begin the day with breakfast before transferring back to San Jose for your overnight stay.
Day 9: Depart San Jose
Transfer today to San Jose International Airport to make your onward flight.
